The Pros and Cons of Human Cloning
Human cloning is the scientific process of making an entirely new human being. It is a form of asexual reproduction in which a child produced by cloning is a genetically identical copy of an existing person (Brock 4). Whereas animals such as rats, sheep, dogs, cats, and monkeys have been cloned, ethical issues stand in the way of cloning humans. Human cloning has several advantages and disadvantages to individuals and society.
One of the principal benefits of human cloning is that it would be a means of relieving infertility. The technology would allow men who have no sperm and women who have no ova to produce offspring that is biologically related to them (Mitrovic 77). The cloning of embryos through embryo splitting or nuclear transfer can enhance the chances of successful conception by increasing the number of embryos for implantation (Mitrovic 77). Cloning can help advance the reproductive rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. It would enable gay and lesbian couples to have a child without having an egg or sperm donor (Brock 7).
Human cloning eliminates the risk of transmitting hereditary diseases and other harmful conditions to the offspring (Devolder and Gyngell 2).
