Effects of Homeschooling
In the society today, many learning institutions offer homeschooling practices to their students to enable them learn while at home. This is usually conducted by the responsible parents and tutors. This practice has been considered an alternative to private and public schools in most of the developed countries. However in other countries, the practice has remained illegal and is only guaranteed for college students. This paper therefore seeks to discuss some of the pros and cons of homeschooling to students (Murphy 56).
Some of the negative impacts of homeschooling may include: lack of exposure to diversity on the students. Students who consider homeschooling to be their favorite method of education should understand diversity which is dictated by the community. Most homeschooling students take every moment and use it as the opportunity to learn. This is harmful since the student fails to socialize with their fellow students to learn new cultures apart from their own. Homeschoolers get involved in all aspects of the society like for instance getting involved in fund raising, they help out at nursing homes when their counterparts in public schools are in school but interestingly, they have a major challenge when it comes to participating in co-curriculum activities in school like dances, sports, plays and graduations. These activities will require their physical presence in school in order for them to take part. Some parents however, may take the responsibility of homeschooling their children due to several reasons which may have some disadvantages to their children. When they decide to homeschool their children, they will be required to set time for educating their children. This might not be easy especially for single parents and working parents. They have to prepare and organize for lesions, teach, give texts, mark, and even plan for the field trips. This will require parents to invest their time for the success of their children which might not be possible for many parents. Apart from time, homeschooling is quiet costly as compared to the public schools in countries where education is free. These parents may be forced to pay for homeschooling programs which may be beneficial but in the other hand increases the cost of child’s education. In practical subjects like physics and chemistry requires more practical work which is possibly offered by regular schools as opposed to home (Jeynes 88). This will make it hard for the parents to get all the materials and apparatus.
Despite the negative effects of homeschooling, there are some of the positive impacts as well. For instance the child will be ...
