Ethical Implications on the Use of Placebos in Clinical Trials (Essay Sample)
#110695 "Psychology" - Coursework, 2 pages
Awesome thanks so much!
In lieu of the originally scheduled debate, I am assigning a debate paper. Although the topic is not necessarily related to Learning and Memory, I think it is especially relevant in the current pandemic climate.
The topic: "What are the ethical implications on the use of placebos in clinical trials?" As you may have seen in the news recently, there has been a number of putative drugs that may prove effective in the treatment of COVID-19, including hydroxychloroquine and flavipiravir. These have gone into clinical trials and out of scientific necessity there is a treatment group and a placebo group using real patients of COVID-19.So in other words, one group gets the potentially life saving drug and the other gets a placebo (e.g., "sugar pill"). Your task is to decide whether it is ethical or not to conduct clinical trials using a placebo group.
The Assignment: Read the following two articles and take a stance, PRO or CON on the use of placebos. The paper should be 2-3 pages in length (full pages!) using APA format. You should also have 2-3 peer-reviewed citations or articles from reputable sources (Scientific American, etc) to back up your points. I will post an APA guide/rubric on Bb in case you are not familiar with the guidelines.

Some debates exist regarding the ethical implications of using Placebo in clinical trials, whereas there are effective treatments in the clinical setting. The pronouncement of Helsinki fueled these controversies in the year 2000. Since then, further debates were generated in 2004, and the World Medical Association (WMA) issued another announcement that guaranteed post-study and robust interventions (Barnhill & Miller 673). In line with that, both the national health council and the federal council of medicine have made efforts to give information on some of the regulations on using placebos across the globe.
