Political Cartoon
The cartoon by Patrick Chappatte attempts to fuse both the political and religious arena. The cartoon is targeting the Vatican priests who have been criticized by the UN over abuse. It shows that there has been increasing issues of child abuse in Vatican prompting the UN to raise the issue publically. As clearly evident in this piece, the artist makes it clear that it is a UN seating by the symbols “UN” and also the UN worldly known Logo. The picture of a man who a viewer can easily picture to be the chair off the motion is holding a “REPORT ON CHILD ABUSE BY PRIESTS”. Among the attendants as indicated by the banner “Holy see” which is the other word for Vatican; the home of the Roman Catholic Church, are the priests who seems to be not in the mood to discuss the motion. Creatively, the artist of the cartoon brings a clear picture through the conversation the two priests are making on their hatred on sermons. This cartoon has been based on the recent occurrences all over the world where priests have been vandalizing children sexually. There have been also cases of child labor as priests are using underage children as their servants.
It implies that there have been activities by priests abusing children. The abuse comes in many forms the major abuse being one involving sexual activities. This sexual abuse frustrates the image associated with Catholicism implying a holy, sovereign and democratic union of believers. The implication still touches on the fact that there has been a disconnection and dysfunction of the church to improve code of conduct within so that it can ensure protection of the society at large from any form of abuse whatsoever. The increasing activities involving the child abuse acts contrary to the law of celibacy which implies leading a holy life serving God without any sexual activity. The implication therefore is that many have acted against this oath and to hide the identity of strictness to the oath, they prey on children who act as the only easier victims available. Consequently, the UN criticizes the Vatican priests for failing to avail compensation for the victims of abuse. The Vatican priests sometimes show concern by ensuring that the perpetrators of the abuse face the law but then fail to compensate the victims who suffer under their religious confinement. Such victims face a lot of challenges within the society like stigma and an act of compensation can do a lot to assist them maybe through acquiring specialized medical attention.
It embeds on issues surrounding Vatican. Vatican is the city-state that acts as the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It encompasses the leadership of the Catholic Church as it houses the pope. The cartoon tries to embed the issues surrounding Vatican as the key pillar behind the doctrines which constitute Catholic Church basing on the issue of child abuse. With the UN focusing on an issue that appears to reveal the sins that happen within the church, it tries to seek a form of intervention that may arise from the leaders especially the pope. The UN is concerned about restoring sanity in the Catholic Church that has been clearly observed with many of its believers. It is a revelation trying to show that all is not well with Vatican citing the instances of child molestation by the very people who are supposed to act as mentors to such children. The Vatican is the one that maintains strict adherence to celibacy oath yet some of the high priests and nuns fail to honor this thus directing sexual abuse to children. Any act that happens in a particular institution has the blame directed towards the leaders. The same appl...
