A Proposal for Immigration Reforms
The number of people migrating to the United States in search of employment and a better life has been on the rise; it is estimated to be higher than in any other country in the world. The idea behind the American dream has been a motivating factor, and this is where any person, regardless of their colour, ethnicity, or where they were born, is believed to be in a position to attain their version of success in a community where upward mobility is guaranteed for everyone. The United States' general immigration process is one of a kind. An individual intending to migrate to states must have a petition approved by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Immigration reforms change the current policies and regulations, which constitute a change to promote, expand, open immigration, or reduce immigration to prevent people from working without a permit or living illegally in the country (Nunn et al. 43). The committee of immigration should issue visas to immigrants who qualify, and their stay in the States promotes the economic status of the United States.
Regulating the number of immigrants is very crucial and should be strictly followed to avoid overstretching the country’s economic needs as much as they are essential in boosting the economic well-being by growing the country's economy in providing labour and paying taxes which is a source of revenue for the United States government. The immigration reforms committee should avoid the immigration quota system; the primary focus should be based on giving visas to those who qualify and are skilled in at least one profession or trade to avoid burdening the country with an unskilled labour force, which might deviate to crime for survival. Immigration has led to more innovation, occupational specialization, a better-educated workforce, and boosted economic productivity (Mérel, Pierre, and Rutledge 74). The United States government should also put in place policies and regulations which protect immigrants from exploitation and improve the process of employment verification to curb misuse and violation of labour rights.
The current immigration processes should be subjected to revision often to ensure that all factors are considered to migrate to the United States. The regulations should be implemented at all levels, and promptly reporting should be done to minimize loopholes that might arise. For a more efficient and faster immigration system, the primary cause driving asylum seekers to seek refuge in the United States should be addressed with other governments and organizations by making homes for refugees in those countries. The United States can offer diplomatic negotiation and financial support through local and international Non-Governmental Organizations working to create improved safety and opportunities for families. The United States government can also increase trim legal migration options accessible closer to home. By doing so, the immigrant will have undergone a thorough vetting process in an American consulate in their country, which reduces the burden of vetting them again after arriving in the United States.
Illegal immigrants present a threat to the United States; the government should formulate ways of formalizing their stay, which can only be achieved by the government ensuring that it contacts the home country of the illegal immigrant and vetting them promptly; some scholars might argue that these immigrants should be deported to their country. Still, a study shows that illicit immigrants increase the size of the United States economy, which contributes to economic growth, enhances the welfare of the natives, and increases national revenue through tax payment. These immigrants also provide both skilled and unskilled labour to firms which encourages high productivity and benefits consumers by the fact that demand will be high and thus lower prices for goods and services. From an economist point of view, the legalization of illegal immigrants translates to an increase in their earnings and consumption, which leads to a rise in the United States gross domestic product (Treyz, Frederick, and Evangelakis 141). The government should create clear guidelines for acquiring citizenship for illegal immigrants by allowing them to apply for temporary legal status as they are observed to ensure they bring additional value to the economy: the point-based system to be adopted to attract human capital and less of individual employers demands.
The proposal by the retired President Donald Trump to build a wall in the United States and Mexico border was a farfetched ideology that will have serious implications on the environment (Peters et al. 742).
