Are Humans Morally More Important Than Animals?
Morality can be termed as rules and human behavior that govern the activities of the human beings. Moral rules specify whether certain actions are right or wrong and if it’s generally accepted within the community. Morality issues have been linked to religions, additionally, it has been found that the issues to do with morality can have serious effects. Mostly, it deals with personal values that are established by the individuals basing on the upbringing and background. This study aims at showing why the human beings have regarded themselves as very important unlike other animals.
It is believed that all humans are equal when it comes to basic moral status. This is because they possess the same fundamental rights and often have comparable interests. However, it is not worth it believing that some beings are entitled to greater moral considerations than others. In essence, if one encounters an alien being may be from another planet that engages in complex behaviors will not be justified in failing to an extend of being unrespectful merely since it from another species than is not a human being. In fact, they should be treated as human beings (Zamir, Tzachi, 2007). If the Aliens show the capacity of being rational, then they ought to be considered in the scope of the moral principles. This is an attempt to prove the saying that all human beings are special in moral status and not the nonhumans. It is true that persons encountered are human, and moreover, it can be true that some animals who are not less worthy in virtue of a human being possess the sense of morality and, therefore, should be treated so (Takala, Tuija,. Et al. 2009).
If the intellectual abilities of the humans and other animals being incommensurable, then the abilities of the humans intellectually can be judged differently but not claimed to be superior as that unique cognitive abilities possessed can collapse as well. The claims that the humans are smarter than the chimps, apes, and any other animals support the idea that some humans are smarter than some humans. Philosophers have traditionally claimed that the variety of factors is morally significant. However, the claims that the human beings are more important and superiors to other animals are not yet been proved. In essence, human beings are expected and obligated to treat other animals humanly but sometimes, the interest of the humans should be paved way by these animals. For instance, if an animal is a cure for some kind of a disease a person is suffering from, then there can be no option, but the human to kill that animal so that one can get the medicine (Verma, Ashish S, & Anchal Singh, 2014).
Furthermore, animals have been deemed to be less important than the animals. This is justified by the facts that the human being has some unique properties regarding the moral standing in which the animals do not possess. In addition, animals are seen to matter only in terms of life and allowed to human to kill them for food. Philosophers are as well justified this by saying that, animals have been found to cling to some circumstances in which people would give up. For instance, people commit suicide when they are overwhelmed by certain situation sin life, animals do not. This means that the life of a person is more important than those for animals. Moreover, it is indubitably clear that humans have the powers to imagine while animals do not. This implies that the humans have the ability to visualize things that can lead them to be successful and thus flourish in life. It is incredible that they also have the intense ability to recognize and become aware of one self. For instance, humans recognize concepts such as ethics and compassions on the other hands, animals do not possess such concepts and recognition ability. In this regards, it is coherent that humans are more important and superior than the animals (Lee, Grace,. Et al. 2015).
Consequently, when a human is born, one has the potential and ability to grow and undertake tasks which an animal is not able to. A person can grow up and contribute to fields such as medicine, arts and science to enrich one life and those living around them both human and non-humans. Nevertheless, animals have been found to make differences as well but not to the greater impacts as of humans. Therefore, it is regarded that both humans and animals are worth but humans are more worth that the animals that make the humans more important. In some case, it has been claimed that the humans are not so much important than other animals (Shafer-Landau, Russ, 2013). For instance, it has been found that some animals such as the apes have the abilities and capability to solve problems that humans can as well. They do this trough reasoning. Experiments that have been carried out showed that the apes have the powers of forming the concepts and generalization in the context of conceptual capability in conjunction with symbols of communication. It is clear that these animals possess the human abilities and thus important like the human beings. In this regard, animals should be treated with compassion and consideration like human beings. As a result from this finding, the animals should as well be treated equally like humans and should also possess their right that should be respected by the humans. However, it is found that mostly in the nations globally infringe the rights of these animals (Regan, Tom, 2014).
