Environmental changes are continuously shifting, which is exposing residents to new risks, such as extreme temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and rising sea levels. There are mitigation policies in New York City aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. While these efforts will reduce the magnitude of climate changes in the future, they cannot prevent global warming altogether. The New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC) is responsible for developing policies that ensure the long-term sustainability of the city. The NPCC members include experts on climate change, including legal and risk management aspects. The panel identifies climate vulnerabilities within the city and avails the information to stakeholders for the development and implementation of climate resilience programs (Zimmerman & Faris 183). New York City temperature, rainfall, and sea level will increase significantly by mid this century. Rising sea level poses a great threat to the city because it is located along the coast. This poses a risk to the city’s infrastructure because low-lying areas and wetlands are likely to flood more frequently. The increase in temperature will cause a strain on infrastructure and increase the electric load as people try to maintain cool temperatures during the summer (Zimmerman & Faris 185).
