Ending Gender as a Social Mandate
By definition, gender refers to the cultural, psychological, or behavioral traits that associated with being female or male. Differences in sex are real, and some are present at birth. However, the society magnifies the difference, and it becomes a societal problem to belong either gender or none. Gender issues affect transgender people significantly, and they are unable to lead happy and normal lives (Aoki 148). All people have the right to be treated equally and fairly irrespective of their gender. For justice, fairness and equality to be established, there is a need to end gender as a social mandate. Ending gender as a social order means treating all people equally without taking into consideration their sexual orientations. By putting an end to gender as a social mandate, transgender people will live healthy lives without fear of being segregated or discriminated against (Bulldagger 141).
Ending gender as a social mandate will help to reduce gender-based violence. People think that gender violence only refers to physical attacks on women or men at workplaces or home based on their sexual orientations. However, gender-based violence includes psychological torture that transgender people go through (Serano 87). Questions such as the pronouns these people use or why they wear certain clothes torture them psychologically. In a society that does not recognize gender as a social mandate, people live peacefully, and incidents of gender-based violence are rare. Sexism is a social ill that a society can overcome by ending gender as a social mandate. In other words, defining people based on their gender is oppressive (Bulldagger 139).
Transgender people will feel as appreciated and acceptable members of the society, enabling participate actively in development projects. For instance, transgender people find it hard to take part in competitions because some people feel that they have an advantage. (Aoki 146). Transgender people have higher levels of testosterone or estrogen, and they tend to be more active than their male or female counterparts are. The energy that transgender people have should be harnessed, and this is achievable through ending gender as a social mandate. Besides, transgender people are unable to express themselves because of how the society perceives them. They feel like outcasts, and they live in cocoons. Being able to speak freely will enable them to participate in societal matters (Bulldagger 142).
On the other hand, ending gender as a social mandate can hurt the society. We cannot ignore gender because it is a real issue. According to Serano, gender is not a social construct (88). Gender is non-fictional and is an amalgamation of identities, bodies, and sensations and life experiences. More importantly, sex gives one an identity (Kusalik 57). If people eliminate gender as a social mandate, people will have no identity. Gender indent helps people associate with particular...
