Differences and diversity
1 How are Ethno-racial and/or gender distinctions represented in the ads?
Media play an important role in bringing the true meaning of ethnicity and race as a part of our identity or social institution.it is very true that in most magazines or movies, the major characters are always people from the white race. People from colored race play the role of a maid, gangsters, terrorists, model minorities and sometimes, the best friends of the supportive. In most advertisements, certain expensive and classy products like cars, and phones are marketed with white race characters, while other low-class product advertised from people from colored races.
Gender also play an important role in most advertisements. There are some products that are associated with a particular gender. Most of the fashion products will always pout women as the portrait of the ads. Male gender is associated with ads of expensive cars and classy houses.
2 Do the images reinforce or contradict images from other areas of social life?
The truth is that these images in most occasions contradict the reality in the area of social life. Like the case of the privileged group of people who owns expensive cars, phones and houses which are always linked the white race community. This is always a lie since there exist several colored races with that kind of expensive life, and actually, they belong to the higher social class in the society. There also exist a notion in the ads that it is the male gender who own properties. The reality is that the female gender in the near past has become more aggressive and independent, and mostly owners of big properties like houses and expensive cars. This shows how media has paid a deceive role. The media has naturally promoted racism and ethnicity by their adverts.
3 Is social class an important factor in the ads? If so, in what way(s)? Are some ethnic
Groups represented more than others?
Social class is a very important factor to consider in ads. This helps to send a specific message to people of a specific class. Most ads are targeting a particular class of people. These are the people they believe can afford their products and hence their potential customers. The wrong impression of these ads is that the media use people from particular race to represent a social class. Like noted earlier, most classy goods are advertised by the white race community, to show that they belong to a privileged class, while middle-class goods or low-class goods are advertised by people from colored races, to show that they belong to those middle-class and low-class groups. This is also a stereotyped idea which is not true, but the media insists on using it.
4 What kinds of social and culturally defined messages are being communicated in the ads
about ethnic-racial distinctions and/or gender/differences in American society?
The ads tend to communicate a very strong messages to the public. That there is racial discrimination that still exists. The media also tend to promote the idea of segregating people according to their race or ethnic group. In fact, they create the idea that some product or lifestyle belong to a specific racial group and not any other. This is a false idea that in the real sense, does not exist at all. Race or ethnic group is not a way of distinguishing social classes in the society.
5 What other criteria of differences/distinctions are noted? For gender? For ethnic-racial
distinctions?
There also exist other criteria of presenting Ethno- racial distinction and gender. This includes, some professions are only meant for people of particular race. There are also some types of clothes that are ethnic group oriented. The form of entertainment and characters in movies, all reflect racial distinction among communities.
6 Are some Ethno-racial categories of people omitted entirely and are, therefore, invisible?
There is an omission of the Chinese and the Japanese races exist in the society. There is no any specific characteristics that are linked to them, and hence they are deemed to be invisible in the society. There is also the omission of the red Indians society in the media context.
7 Does invisibility matter? How so?
