Gender Discrimination
Since the time of our ancestors, gender discrimination has been part of the society. The rights of women have been suppressed, and males have been seen to be the dominant figure in the society. Even today, men are still seen as a figure of leadership even in the countries where women are considered to have the same rights as their male counterparts. There are still traditional minded people in the society and because of this discrimination of women is an issue that is still present and practiced.
In the works of Judy Brady, "I Want a Wife" men are portrayed to have chauvinistic characteristics, and they discriminate women. The story by Smith "My Mother Never Worked;" shows a hardworking woman who gets married. Her husband goes to work in other fields while the woman is left to work on their farm. In this story, smith portrays the mother to have taken care of the farm and the children alone without help from the husband.
In the story, Brady portrays a man as a person who has a tendency of taking a woman and making her wife. Then he expects the woman to do every task there is to be done in the household and on top of that, he expects her to satisfy any desire the man would have or wants. Brady says in the story that the man wants a wife who can work and take him to school, and while the man is gone to school, the wife is expected to take care of the man’s children (Brady, 502).
In the world today, there are some families, who still live under tradition lifestyle thus making women experience discrimination in these settings. Following this, many Asian countries prepare their young girls to become women, who will one day play the role of a homemaker whose role will be to prepare meals for the family and take care of the house chores. Women are taken to have to live according to some norms, which are dictated by men (Ro and Choi).
Even though there are many organizations, which advocate for education for all genders today, the notion that education opportunities are best suited for the males in the family is still being practiced. The traditional thought that men are more suitable and talented to studies is still strong. This makes men think they are more intellectual than women thus expressing gender discrimination.
In her story, Brady states that the man wants a wife who will take care of his children when they fall sick and one who is around the children when they need special care. The man will not be around at that time because he will be in school and cannot miss classes (Brady 503). The woman is not given a chance to go to school.
Men have a notion that the reason they should study is that they have to give their family a better life. while the women are supposed to stay at home, and prepare meals and take care of the house chores (Ro and Choi).
Brady states that the man would like to go back to school so that he can become economically dependent so that he can support himself and support those dependent on him, of course, that is his family including the wife. Judy goes on to say that, the man wants the woman to work so that she can take him to school and she would still go back home and take care of his children (Brady, 502). The woman is denied a chance to go to school and strives to take care of the family and support her husband. There should be equality in education to prevent gender discrimination.
The family is the basic unit of the society. In the family, men and women take on different roles and generally, women’s roles are considered lesser. The family as a unit is believed to be patriarchal in nature as the male is the head and the female is the heart of the household. The men go to work while the women stay at home and do chores. However, in a case where both the man and the wife go to work, the wife is still expected, to do the house chores and take care of the kids (Ro and Choi).
In "My Mother Never Worked" Smith states how the husband goes to work to work on other farms where he is employed and lives the woman to work on their farm and still take care of the children. The woman is seen raising chickens feeding the pigs, milking the cows, and plant and harvest the garden among other things. She even sews clothes for the children (Smith, 124). In her story, "I Want a Wife" Brady points out that man wants the wife to go to work and pay for his studies, and after work she should go back and take care of the children and take care of the house chores (Brady 502).
