Justice has been described in a manner that makes it indistinguishable virtually from the general view of rightness. According to Aristotle, justice is a concept that manifests itself in two different ways. This is the individual view or definition, while the other is the judgment of the individual manifest of justice as it entails the intrinsic value of what is or not (Evenstad). As such, particular justice is a narrow scope as determined by individuals' perception (individual ethics), whereas the 'virtue of justice as a whole' includes what a person determines to be just or not (intrinsic value of acts). Therefore, the definition of justice rests upon how people are treated. Matters regarding justice arise when people face circumstances that cause them to advance claims of resources, freedom, or opportunities. Injustice results from conflicts between the individual interests of people and what they are entitled to have. People’s views of justice vary from one person to another, thus making it a social construct. Martin Luther King Jr. states in his letter, “A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law” (Ali-Dinar), to illustrate that justice is a human construct that is held in fundamentally different views.
Justice is totally a matter of human concept. For instance, if humans did not exist, then justice would not exist. For example, in wild animals in the park, when a lion kills an antelope, it is a matter of survival, and thus, we do not view that wild interaction as evil. It is an entirely natural act that has no moral consequences and, therefore, a moral act. However, when a person kills another person, it is viewed as injustice, and the person is punished so that 'justice' can be administered. Martin Luther King Jr.’s strengths as an influencer and part of the rhetoricians lie in his ability to employ his skills and influence to provoke an emotional response and grant him credibility. He argues about the terrors that he, alongside other African-Americans, faces lack of dignity, lack of respect, and constant humiliation by the whites. His main idea was to cause massive influence that would aid him in fulfilling his dream of the United States, of a unified country where there would be equality for all people. “rise from the dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood” (Ali-Dinar).
Martin Luther King Jr. had his own perception of justice. According to his individual ethics, the White supremacists' racial discrimination was unjust and a violation of respect, dignity, and a humiliation to the African American society. His idea was that equality and respect for all people regardless of their race, origin or ethnicity was the broad definition of justice, which outweighed the white supremacists' interests. On the other hand, the white supremacists must have held that the African Americans were less of what the whites are, and thus the whites are to oppress them. He states, “I am in Birmingham because injustice is here” (Ali-Dinar). Martin Luther King Jr.'s call for equality and understanding to all masses is equipped to a call against the conflicting interests between the African-Americans and the whites, each side believing in holding what they would regard to be just or not.
In chapter three of One’s own room, Shakespeare's Sister, Woolf refuses to accept the opinion she receives from the books she reads in the British Books museum. She decides instead to look into the history of women's lives. She realizes that great work does not just happen but is supported by the writer's health, income, and livelihood. She thus feels that digging into history would explain why the women did not write.
From her research, Woof learns that women belong to their father or their husbands due to the long arrangements made by handing over. There is a huge difference between how the women are represented in literature and their real-life experiences. Characters such as Anna Karenina and Antigone's lives represent such disparities. For example, the two-character were considered to be powerful, but in their real lives, they were even beaten (Woof,2265). Wife beating was a right for the men. Further, the women were seen as inferior and were never given a chance at an education.
Many of the greatest works are those of women, which is an indication that women were superior to men in terms of intelligence and heroism. However, they were not even allowed to go out with a male escort. A comparison between the real-life event and women's fiction work is what will bring a better understanding. Until the ninth century, there were very few poems, diaries, and records written by women. This thus makes it difficult to be certain why women did not or what were their hopes and aspirations in life.
To give a clear picture of the injustices that the women went through, Woof creates an imaginary character called Judith Shakespeare, a sister to Shakespeare. Despite being more gifted than her brother, Judith is not given an education other than the one she learns by herself in her free time while her brother has a chance to follow his path and receives an education of the highest level; he goes to Stratford. Since the community excepts her to conform to social standards, she gets no time to develop her talent. She does her writing in secret. Due to fear of reprisal, she has to hide her work and even burn it. She becomes engaged at a very tender age, and although her father loves him, he cannot defend her from early marriage.
