Public policy has constantly been influenced by wealthy Americans and their respective business organizations. The trend has given the economic elites and organized business groups the power to control election outcome and dominate processes of policy making. The preferences of ordinary Americans are left with near-zero and statistically immaterial effect on public policy.
However, the voice of American people would be heard and influence public policy decisions if they actually came out to vote. The power in votes is boundless yet ordinary Americans do not utilise it. Ordinary citizens are to blame because they do not vote yet they know that electoral turnout is linked to economic standing. Their majority votes would ensure public policy was done in accordance with their wishes.
Moreover, ordinary citizens ought to re-embrace the long forgotten grassroots movements’ participation. As evidenced by the 1970s women and civil rights movements, politicians respond to mass mobilization. These movements are presently inexistent, and competing against wealth antagonists requires robust people-oriented awareness groups to influence public processes.
Public preferences reflect policy decisions to do with affordable health insurance, mass unemployment and job creation, strengthening the economy, increase of high minimum wage, lower taxes, increased funding for secondary and primary education, and improving higher education.
