Steps to Combat Terrorism
In the last two decades, terrorist activities have increased thereby posing a big problem on the security of people around the world. Although terrorism is a long time issue, especially in developed countries, in recent times, it has spread even in developing countries where terrorist groups have found a potential ground to recruit and thrive (Spencer 93). After the 9/11 attacks, it was clear that terrorism has changed drastically to target mass killings in a bid to noticed and gain media attention. This attack changed the war against terrorism completely, leading to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan aimed at destroying Al Qaeda and its affiliates. To combat terrorism, authorities should concentrate on reducing chances of extremism, restrict financial support to groups, and encourage community policing.
The source of funds for terrorism groups plays an important role in motivating members to engage in terrorism activities. For one to reduce the activities by terrorists’ organizations, it is important to identify the source of finances to ensure that their operations are crippled (Winer and Roule 88). It is no secret that people who engage directly in perpetrating terrorism are paid huge some of money to accept to engage in activities such as suicide bombings. In addition, terrorists’ organizations use funds to acquire weapons for attack. Moreover, after freezing of accounts by the US and other government across the world, the extent of attacks has reduced with terrorist mostly using improvised explosive devices, suicide bombers, and gun attacks. The use of such tactics has led to reduction of casualties compared to use of complicated bombs that can have massive effects (Winer and Roule 89).
The growth of extremism is largely dependent on the existence of unstable governments around the ground where terrorism for cells to recruit and train (Aldrich 751). If given an opportunity, one would address the issues that underlie extremism in such a situation. It is imperative for governments around the world to work together to ensure stability of such countries by providing financial and military support. In addition, terrorism-recruiting cells usually target desperate youth who are promised luxurious life and financial gain. This means that poverty is a crucial aspect that terrorism organization groups consider when setting bases. In addition, one cannot ignore the use of religion as a tool to recruit young people in terrorism activities (Aldrich 752). Everyone should be encouraged to create harmony among different religious groups in order to ensure that discontents among such group are not used to recruit new members to terrorism activities.
Although governments have invested huge amounts of money in policing, it is not enough to meet the needs of the people. Therefore, one can utilize the communities to combat terrorism (Spencer 95). If community policing can be used well as a complementary method of policing to the formal policing, it will play an important role in gathering information about terrorism activities.
