The topic that I have chosen to explore will be the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNDR) as an international declaration on human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted on December 10, 1948, in Paris during the United Nations General Assembly. The Declaration was the first endeavor made at an international arena to offer nations responsibilities to their citizens to follow the model of human rights. The task of the Declaration was to promote human rights, which apply to every human being equally, in spite of culture, background, religion, race, ethnicity among others. UDHR is non-binding document, permitting national governments to maintain, as well as retain exclusive sovereignty to ascertain the adequacy of their progress on matters touching human rights (Mayers 448). It is a vital aspect within the international community that is invoked under suitable situations by nations along with other judiciaries. The UDHR was tailored by the international community to value equality, dignity, freedom, as well as brotherhood.
The UDHR has been fundamental in promoting human rights across the world. I have chosen this topic because I value the rights of human beings, and any document that values the human dignity and equality will fundamentally attract my attention. This document has inspired and will continue to instigate me to promote human rights in the society. The document has had a deep impact on the development of international human rights where it has been invoked consistently by many nations across the world making it a binding ingredient of the customary international law. Introduction
The conclusion of the Cold War opened avenues for a new era in the history of human relations, the period of globalization. The modern idea of human rights was designed in reaction to the Holocaust of the World War II. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted, which recognized that all human beings have fundamental rights, as well as liberties (Hughes 3).
Human rights have a long history. Following the Second World War, there was need for an organization to promote and maintain international peace and harmony and safeguard the world from new war.
