Pornography and Restriction
With no particular law put in place to control internet pornography, there has been numerous debates on whether pornography should be restricted by law, and to what extent this should be done. Even though many countries have different legislations governing production and distribution of pornographic literature, internet pornography has no jurisdiction and has been largely accessible to everyone. Pornography is principally adult content, and should be viewed by those over the age of eighteen. Restrictions should be made on various aspects of pornography if not to outlaw it outright to ensure that only the adults have an access to the pornographic literature. There are numerous reasons as to why pornography should be restricted. In particular, some of the pornographic contents have violent content that should also be regulated to help minimize cases of violence against women (Lehman 33). In some instances, the pornographic videos involve minors; this is impairs juvenile development in various ways. This paper discusses the reasons why pornography should be restricted.
Much as some nations allow adults to access pornography, there are no proper regulations to ensure that the contents are accessed by exclusively adults. Most commercial pornographic sites do not have efficient age-verification methods. As a result, anybody can access the sexual content. Many times, minors below the age of eighteen have been able to access the materials in the internet. Minors accessing the pornographic materials pose a lot of risks that can impair their all-round development. Most of the minors view the adult content and will embark on experimenting what they see. This perpetuates immorality in the society. Coupled with lack of sex education, the teens may start indulging in sex at an early age. Not only is this immoral, but it also exposes the minors to a lot of health risks. They can acquire sexually transmitted diseases or in worst cases even HIV. With lack of knowledge on reproductive health, these minors can also be in danger of becoming early mothers. This calls for restriction of pornography.
The upsurge of teenage mothers in the recent past reflects how much teenagers engage in sexual activities at an early age. Most of the children engage in sex as a result of pornography influence. They are driven by the desire to experiment what they watch on the pornographic literature (Collins and Murroni 108). Such children lack proper parenting knowledge and cannot bring up their children in a proper way. It is also imperative to note that some of the teenage mothers cannot take care of themselves leave alone their children. This places a heavy burden on their parents. In worst cases, such teenage mothers have lost their lives in their attempts to commit abortion. In restricting pornography, therefore, not only can teen pregnancy be reduced, but cases of abortion can also be lowered.
There are thousands of organizations that produce and distribute child pornography materials. This is alarming, and if restrictive measures are not put in place we may have a “decayed” generation in the future. Pornographic literature is highly addictive. The underage children can get addicted to these contents and this can severely impair their development socially, psychologically and even academically in schools. Research indicates that those minors that are exposed to pornographic literature are more likely to be social delinquents.
Pornography should be restricted or outlawed as it severely affects children’s sexual development and identity. Exposure of children to pornography at early stages of their childhood can lead to sexual deviance. Such sexual deviations can be permanently imprinted on the minds of the children and become part of their sexual orientation. Pornography literature during adolescence misinforms the children about sex-education and interferes with the children’s sexuality development. Researches also indicate that a significant percentage of personality disturbance cases have their root causes in exposure to pornography. Pornography affects children’s sexuality development in innumerable ways. When a child is exposed to pornographic images at an early age, the child may be conditioned to only become aroused at exposure to such pornographic images. Continued exposure to such images can make this conditioning to be permanent such that the person cannot get aroused easily in the absence of the pornographic images. This can lead to a lot of discomfort in adulthood. To develop a healthy society, restrictive measures should be taken against pornography.
From religious and moral points of view, pornography is morally corrupting and should be restricted. Sexual promiscuity, irresponsible sexual behavior, infidelity and unfaithfulness are vices that can trace their roots to pornography. Pornography erodes good behavioral standards in the society. Restricting pornography will thus contribute to establishment of a morally sound society. it is the desire of every parent to instill in their children, desirable values and attitudes. Parents and the general society desire that their children be well informed on relationships, sex and marriage. However, pornography provides powerful counter educative content that renders children exposed to them with wrong attitude and perceptions about the important life matters. Highly detestable practices are depicted to be normal in pornographic literature (Potter 135). In particular, pornography creates an illusion to the consumers that rape is not a criminal act. The explicit sexual content in most cases dehumanizes and depicts women as sex objects.
The pornographic literature forms a powerful sex education deforming tool. Some notable ways in which pornography contributes to poor sex education include but not limited to the following. Firstly, pornographic addicts are more callous towards women and have incorrect and corrupt perceptions about sexuality. In addition, they have insatiable crave for bizarre and deviant sexual activities. They also do not value relationships and marriages as expected. To them monogamy may not be that crucial. Instead, polygamous associations are normal.
Not only should the pornographic literature be restricted for the sake of the minors, but regulating pornography will also benefit the society in various ways. Some of the adult videos have violent scenes that can contribute to continued violence in the society. Restricting these materials will help reduce violence in our societies. Pornography encourages high level of immorality in the societies, and should be restricted. In addition, it leads to erosion of some values in the society. Pornography is highly addictive and studies indicate that it erodes intimacy in relationships and marriages. Husbands and wives who are addicted to pornography usually keep it a secret affair. In most cases they feel guilty and end up feeling isolated. Such spouses end up retreating from their partners emotionally. These emotional retreats may mark the beginning of endless problems in marriages and relationships. As evidenced in most sex videos, pornography makes love to lose its meaning in the society.
Pornography gives an illusion that sex is not related to love marriage and commitment. This is misleading. Pornography also gives an indication that engagement in irresponsible sex has no dreadful implications. This can encourage irresponsible sexual behavior in the society. The pornographic videos mislead the addicts to imagine that there are no dangers such as sexually transmitted diseases that are associated with sexual activities. This notion contributes to the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Those who oppose restriction of pornography argue that it spices partners’ sexual lives thereby making their marriages stronger. The contrary is true in most cases. Researches indicate that addiction to pornography is detrimental to relationships and marriages. This is because not only does it led to reduced sexual arousal, but it also leads to decreased satisfaction of the addict with his or her partner. Further, those who are frequently exposed to pornography have low regard of intimacy and trust. They become so much drowned in the sea of fantasization and devote little of their time and energy in their physical relationships. These effects can contribute to br...
