Who Can We Trust
In traditional societies, information was gathered using a pen and paper. This data was stored in huge cabinets which were labeled alphabetically for easy access. However, in those days data collection, storage and analysis was a daunting task since it took several employees to profile an individual person. Nowadays, this work is done using computers because they are faster and more accurate than humans. In addition, they offer a large storage capacity and they can stream data from a remote location and analyze it in real-time.
The issue of privacy has changed in the digital age as compared to traditional days. The climate analogy presented in Peak denial is relevant to the theme of privacy, data, and surveillance. This is because almost all businesses, security agencies and, government departments are collecting sensitive details from everyone. Each time an individual visits a website, performs a query on search engines, visits shopping malls and drives on streets, that information is gathered and stored in massive databases. The secret collection, access, and control of sensitive data challenge moral values in the society since not every party can be entrusted with private information. Some privacy activists and whistleblowers have started convincing people to do something on the issue. However, it seems that people are ignoring the warning since they cannot stop using their phones, social media, emails and other technologies. This paper argues that businesses and security agencies should not collect private data without seeking consent from affected individuals.
