The internet is invading each corner of our existence. It has become inevitable for a majority of the digital, modern population. Politics, on the other hand, affects every part of our lives. And, it's more of a game of interests than location. Coincidentally, the internet is modeled to link interests. In fact, with no regard to location. So the two marry.
Politicians can use the salient properties of the internet to their advantage. Such salient features are as the following.
1. Reach.
Last year (2018), 4.1 billion people used the internet. This is such a large audience that can be used effectively by politicians to influence the public.
At least each rational individual knows about the internet. Since it pools together interests, people may come together due to political interest. Such gatherings, often on Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, help campaigns reach their target faster.
2. Cost-effectiveness.
It takes more than a lot of resources to pass one's political message physically, or via other media like the newspapers. With the internet, you can use one medium (for example, Facebook) to pass the same message to millions and track who received it as well as who didn't, at a significantly lower cost.
