Most organizations as well as individuals have adopted a routine to work for longer with the aim of achieving more results. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) carried out a research that linked long working hours to premature death. The report indicated that most people in the developed countries have adopted this routine. People who work for long hours are often characterized by burnout conditions. This is where one is extremely exhausted as a result of overworking. A study conducted by the Institute of health sciences in Aragon identified that there is increased risk of burnout six-fold for those people who work for over 40 hours in a week as compared to those working for less than 35 hours.[Ibid.,26.] [Emil Skamene, [Mcgill University Health Centre]]
Another study argues that long working hours affect the quality of one’s life. Long working hours deny people a chance to spend time with their family and friends. Earning money through overtime work benefits the family financially. However, the argument asserts, the best life is one which considers and balances social and economic life. One, therefore, needs to balance work and life without compromising any side. The research also maintains that people working for longer hours are prone to risks such as physical injury.
