Pluralism implies a diversity of distinct people or ideas. Therefore, a pluralistic society is the one that embraces diversity. For this reason, its representatives are tolerant to other people’s point of view and beliefs even if they do not agree with them. Accordingly, colonial America was a pluralist society since it tolerated slaves and immigrants from distinct cultural backgrounds as well as individuals who held different religious viewpoints.
Detailed Analysis of Why Colonial America Should be considered a Pluralist Society
With the expansion of the transatlantic economy, there was a mass movement of slaves from Africa while others shifted from Scotland or Ireland due to their impoverished homelands in pursuit of green pastures in colonial America. As a result, its population exploded due to increased birth rates. The majority of the slaves were from distinct regions and ethnic groups in Africa who provided labor in various plantations including rice, sugar, and tobacco plantations. Likewise, because of the pluralistic nature of the American colonies, the seventeenth century experienced a mass movement of immigrants from Great Britain to America due to religious persecution and a weak economy in their homelands. The American colonies such as Maryland implemented an act that outlawed the persecution of religious followers.
