Avatar 2009
Avatar 2009 is an epic sci-fi movie written, co-produced and directed by James Cameron. The film stars are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver. The movie joins another epic production that Cameron is widely known for, the Titanic. The Movie Avatar is considered as a good sci-fi movie because of the quality the story line, its set design and the visual effects that give an incredible quality and an almost life like feeling to the avatars.
The story line in the movie Avatar is based on a fictitious world called Pandora with its inhabitants called the Na’vi. The Na’vi have several clans among themselves, the movie is based on the clan living in the forest called the Omaticaya. The film is set in the year 2148, at this time the world’s common resources are totally depleted due to over exploitation and thus humans have to go and exploit other possible energy sources from Pandora.
The main themes in the story include, respecting Mother Nature, respect to other cultures and protecting Natural Habitat. The hero of the movie Jake Sully’s role is played by Sam Worthington, after his twin brother’s death, Jake offers to take his job as part of a science group to go on an expedition to Pandora. The role Neytiri is played by Zoe Saldana, a little girl of the family's founder Eytukan as the father and Mo’at as the mother. The storyline will be appealing to the audiences due to the conflict between humans and the Na’vi. Humans in the movie try to destroy the Na’vis and their culture to get the mineral Unobtanium. This conflict escalates to a total war at the end of the movie.
The lead enemy role is played by Parker Giovanni. He is in control of the army hired by the Resources Development Administration (RDA) to forcefully expel the Na’vi from their homeland Pandora. The major conflicts that leads to the war confrontation in the movie is when the army destroyed the Na'vi's holy tree (the tree of souls) to get to one of the biggest stores of unobtanium.
Another important factor that makes Avatar a good movie is its set design. The set design is considered as a work of art. It includes a vigorously forested moon circling the giant gas Polyphemus situated in Alpha Centauri star system. The importance of set design is not debatable in any movie and it is important that enough time is dedicated for this. According to (Street, 1937), "Amount of primary research would go into planning a set design, using paintings, photography’s and other evidence of period or contemporary life, artistic license would prevail the essence of a place or period in the middle zone.”
Thus, when anyone thinks about set design, the first thing that comes to their mind is how an avatar is created. This world Pandora with its floating mountains, The AMP suits and the creatures in the movie are created to perfection and give an almost real life feeling to the audience. The whole movie is made with visual effects. The extraordinary use of lights and different colors helps to draw people’s attention. For example, the waterfalls and the sky are introduced with special use of lights and colors. The body color of the Avatar and how it is created to match Jake body is a subject of awe to the audience
According to (Dargis, 2009), "The first part of Jake’s voyage for this, is above all, a boy’s rocking adventure. It is one populated by the usual tough Cameron chicks that takes him from a wheelchair into a 10-foot, blue-skinned Na’vi body. At once familiar and pleasingly exotic, the humanoid Na’vi come with supermodel dimensions slender hips, a miniature-apple rear; long articulated digits, the better to grip with; and the slanted eyes and twitchy ears of a cat. The gently curved stripes that line their blue skin, the color of twilight, bring to mind the markings on mackerel tabby cats. For Jake his avatar, which he hooks into through sensors while lying in a remote pod in a semiconscious state, is at first a giddy novelty and then a means to liberation.”
The shooting of the movie avatar is also a subject of discussion by other producers and directors within the movie industry, the clear picture that is shot in 3-D gives the viewer a spectacular viewing experience.
Furthermore (Dargis, 2009) explains its perfect shooting, "In keeping with his maximalist tendencies, Mr. Cameron has shot Avatar in 3-D. One of the reasons is that many ...
