Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller
Introduction
The play presents the main character Willy Loman- a salesperson who has been living a life of self-denial. When he faces the hard truth, it is hard for him to swallow but rather opt to take his life. When the overseas sales commission cannot support the family bills, Willy decides to take a job near his home place but is disappointed once more when the Boss Howard wager refuses to offer the chances and instead fires him. To keep his family going, he often borrows money from his successful neighbor Charley. Even though Willy is in dire need of a paying job, he declines the offer made by Charley because of his ego and the need for keeping his dream, the only thing he can trade. His two sons Biff and Happy, also leave their jobs and decide to engage in a partnership venture to support the family, but the idea is shattered into nothing when securing a loan fails. Out of desperation of failing his family, being a bad role model to his sons, Willy falls into a trench where he becomes illusional, often conversing with the images of his mistresses and his late brother Ben and holding onto the memories of successful past events. Due to this behavior, people isolate themselves from him and end up committing suicide. The title of this play is very significant to the time of the writing, and the themes present from physical death, failure in career, child bringing, and the death of old beliefs. This paper will discuss this in detail.
