A Civil Action
A Civil Action is a legal thriller film directed by Zaillian Steven and based on Jonathan Harr’s book. The main pleadings that I observed in this film is complaint by families who had lost their children through deadly leukemia illness associating the disease to environmental toxins that had contaminated the water supply in the community. These families were raising their complaints against giant corporations in Boston through a local Boston attorney Jan Schlichtmann and his law firm whom they called upon to take a legal action against those responsible for the contamination that resulted to the health hazards.
The discovery tools that I observed from the film are Requests for Admission and Requests for Production of Documents. In the request for admission, the party that represented the families asked the party corporation’s representatives to admit under oath certain facts. The request for admission was sent along with the summons by the court. In filing their response the other party stated that the case lacked evidence of any acceptable standards because if water was the cause, evidence was required to prove that the companies were responsible. Schlichtmann spent his time gathering that evidence.
