Timeline of the Telecommunication Industry Milestones
Introduction
The telecommunication industry has incurred tremendous changes to reach where it is now. From the time when communication was by smoke signals and drums to the current times when information can be sent from one continent to the other at lightning speed. These changes occurred in some stages and below are some of the major milestone that the telecommunication industry has gone through to be where it is now.
1876
Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone. Elisha Gray files a patent application just three hours after Bell. Over 600 patent suits are filed in the next eleven years. All are settled in bells favor. Bell sells his patent to the Western Union for $ 100,000.
1888
First public payphones are put in place. This was the earlier days after the first tests on the just invented telephone.
1904
Telephone answering machines that can transmit from one office to the other are invented. The use of telephones had expanded, and the office phones were now in the market.
1954
First computer operating systems are invented. There is a precedent for computer communication including the use of modems.
1960
The first modem, data phone was designed by AT&T made specifically for converting computer data to analog signal for transmission across its long distance network. This invention improved transmissions efficiency in national and global systems.
1963
Voice and data transmission over microwave systems. There is also the first synchronous satellite that is able to revolve at the same speed as the earth and is able to transmit live voices across continents.
1966
Tom Carter sued AT&T. He wanted AT&T to permit connection of his phone patch. Later FCC approves Carterphone's Decision. AT&T was ordered by FCC to revise tariffs that were to be effective 1/1/69 to permit it to connect CPE. (It was until 1978 that the legal action of getting part 68 of the FCC ruling was put in place). AT&T started developing the Integrated Digital Services Network (ISDN).
1981
 First cellular mobile telephone service is offered. This step must have been one of the greatest creation of all times. Currently, billions of people in the world own and use mobile phones. The way mobile phones are used have changed over time, and they are no longer just used for audio communications due to numerous inventions over the years.
1984
Court orders divestiture of AT&T based on the department of justice suit. This was because AT&T was acting as a monopoly in the provision of communications services. The government was aiming at creating competition for supplying telephone equipment and other supplies to operative companies.
As the government had targeted, there was a surge of competition in the telecommunications companies. The competition led to a series of changes in service delivery and charges in the telecommunication sector.
1989
