Introduction
1859 the United States military armory installed at Harpers Ferry was attacked by an armed band of abolitions that were led by John Brown. Brown wanted to start an armed slave uprising by seizing the armory (Horwitz 2011). The uprisings main plan was intended to be a primary step in the plan to institute a sovereign stronghold of freed slaves. Brown believed that they would be joined by around 200-500 black slaves.
However, Browns' plan did not go as expected. Most of the slaves were not aware of his plan and were not ready. Besides, word had spread to the authorities about his plan and by the time they had captured a handful of slaves, they were surrounded. Ten of his men including two of his sons were killed, and Brown was wounded and captured (Horwitz 2011).
The major effects of the John browns’ cause came after his trial and eventual hanging. Many people came to believe that indeed he was a martyr who died for a worthy cause. There were over 600 spectators at his trial and his performance in the court room changed the perception of the events of the Harpers Ferry. Many of the abolitions came to see him as a hero who was fighting slavery (McDaniel 2013).
Brown stood in the courtroom and got back to his accusers by denying any wrongdoing but admitted to his cause of freeing all slaves. He gave an example of his earlier slave rescue at Missouri where no one was hurt. He brought out to the fore the oppression of the poor and weak by telling the jury that had he acted for the rich it would have been okay (Phillips 2014).
