BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT
There are several relevant theories or concepts about strategic management. One of the theories is the profit maximizing and competition-based approach. This approach was based on the idea of profit maximization and having a competitive advantage. The resource-based theory states that the competitive advantage of firms depends on their internal resources. Other relevant principles are the survival based theory, agency and contingency theory (Wilson 2014, 243).
The video presents the dilemma scenario of the 21st-century education system. It illustrates the ineffectiveness of the changing school system on the young population. The video shows an example of a test carried out on divergent thinking, and it was found that young kids performed better than the adults did. The explanation for this scenario was provided based on the education system tying students to one answer and destroying their ability to think outside the box (Changing education paradigms 2008).
The objectives of the reaction paper were to illustrate how the changing education systems have impact negatively on the upcoming generation. It was to demonstrate clearly how the education system has the made the students unable to think in a creative way due to an education system that created individuals who knew that there is only one solution to a problem.
As presented in the video, it is illustrated that the education system of the 21st century does not differ much from the education regime of our parents or grandparents. The public education is composed of individuals and school systems that tie children to one idea or one line of thought. The public education lacks the strategic capabilities that are essential for success. The public education has been broken down into a standardized form of testing that makes students develop the belief that there is only one solution to a problem. This is advanced even in the classrooms and lecture rooms where students are discouraged from checking for answers provided at the back of the book. Worst of all group work is discouraged yet we all know that teamwork is essential to success in everything in life.
In the video, the arguments by Ken Robinson, shows a lack of strategic capabilities in public education. Children deny going to school because it is depicted as a boring place. The video discusses how individuals undergo a severe school period and still there is no guarantee for jobs after school.
In the video, a test was carried on divergent creativity. One thousand five hundred individuals were sampled. The sampling plan was made up of kindergarten children. At the kindergarten level, the kids’ divergent creativity was high, around 98%. This was a longitudinal study and was performed again when the kids were at the age of 8 and 10 years. The consecutive tests showed that the children divergent creativity reduced as their level of education increased. This reduced divergent creativity was because of the public education that transformed the children into cramming machines that had a limited thinking ability (Hershock 2007, 14).
In the analysis of the competitive advantage of human capacity utilization, we analyze the video by Ken Robinson. In the video, we can see that the education system was designed to model intellectuals for the upcoming jobs because of industrialization. Back then, we are told that individuals were guaranteed of getting jobs after clearing school. However, there is no more guarantee in the job market, and individuals' students are discouraged in their studies. The competitive advantage of human capacity has deteriorated over time. This is because of the education system that is rooted in the past. In schools students, a taught and modeled to have a particular line of thought favored by the public education. The option of free will and diversity of knowledge is discouraged. The competitive advantage of the human capacity is not utilized. The school system transforms students into ineffective elements in the business industry.
A good strategic plan for public education would one that al...
