Songs Analysis
Fur Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven
Mrs. Robinson
Für Elise
Melody(is it smooth [conjunct] or does it jump around [disjunct]? Is the tune memorable or not? Does it have an obvious high point or climax?)
Mrs. Robinson, has a fast melody that becomes memorable as the song goes on. There is no obvious climax in the song because the melody does not seem to graduate in the middle of the song but only becomes louder as it ends
It’s smooth. The tune is very memorable because it is easy to master and sing along to. There is a climax though it is not at an obvious point. The smooth melody also serves the advantage of making the song easily relatable to any person listening to it despite their background or taste in music
Harmony(is it consonant, dissonant or a combination?)
The song is consonant and the listener can note a connection between the different elements in the tune.
The harmony is very consonant. It is relaxed and seems well composed. This makes the listener feel at ease while interacting with the song.
Rhythm(is it duple or triple, driving or calm, simple or complicated?)
Driving rhythm that grows with the song
The song has a driving rhythm that changes when the sequence of the song starts and ends.
Form(Is it ABA, AABA, ABACA, 12-bar blues, Verse/Chorus, ? does it use repetition, variation, contrast?)
The beat of the song is repeated more than what is being sung in the song. As a result, the listener masters the beat of the song before the words being sung.
The composer used repetition, variation and contrast to differentiate later stanzas from the first stanzas. Repetition makes the song easy to remember and master.
Texture(is it thick or thin? monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic? A little of each?
The song is polyphonic with different phonetic sounds
Polyphonic with different sounds at different points. The sounds used complement each other.
Timbre(What instruments/voices do you hear? Is the color of the music warm & rich, cold & brittle, harsh & edgy?)
The tune is made up of the singer’s voice, the guitar and the piano. These different sounds make the music color warm and very inviting to the listener. The tune is danceable to because of the pacing between the repetitive sounds that make up the song
Piano. Color of music warm and rich. Smooth and calm. More so, the fact that Beethoven used the piano as the only musical instrument in the song makes it easy to remember since the sound of the piano is very smooth and easy to remember. The piano sound also makes the song to have a warm and rich color that adds on to the calm atmosphere that the song produces
Word/Music Relationships(Does the music reflect the story that the lyrics tell? Does the pacing of piece allow for time for reflective thought about the lyrics and their impact on you?)
The fast pace of the song does not give the listener the time to r...
