* Eyes On The Prize - (Part 5) Mississippi Is This America 1962–1964
The episode records the killings of Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Medgar Evers in Mississippi. It primarily outlines the astonishing individual risks, that people experienced as they presumed roles for social change during the Mississippi voting rights campaign held in 1962-1964. The civil rights activists in the state advocated for the right to vote. However, the whites resisted the political sharing of power. As a result, the clashes between the civil rights activists and white resistance resulted in the murder of the civil rights workers in 1964.
The movements emphasized in episode 5 include the CORE, SNCC, SCLC, NAACP, and MFDP. In 1962, the CORE “Congress of Racial Equality”, SNCC “Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee”, SCLC “Southern Christian Leadership Conference”, and NAACP “National Association for the Advancement of Colored People” formed the federated organization council and started a voter registration and education project in Mississippi.
