                Diabetes Type 1                                                                  Theresa Bass                                                                    8/16/2016                                                               Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic illness associated with the excessive amount of glucose in the blood system. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system erroneously identifies the cells in the pancreases and attacks them. Consequently, the organ ceases to produce adequate insulin which is responsible for controlling the amount of glucose in the blood. The shortage of insulin causes the body to break down its fats and muscle and results in massive weight loss. An insulin pump is a small device used by patients to deliver insulin by mimicking the hormone secretion functions of the pancreases. Health practitioners should encourage the juvenile diabetic patients to use the insulin pumps in the place of injections (Steineck et al., 2015). Promoting the utilization of the insulin pumps is a step to help the rising population of diabetes type 1 in adopting a flexible routine. Historical databases indicate that there was a 21% increase in diabetes type 1 among youths aged below twenty years between 2001 and 2009. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation observes that 1.25 million Americans live with the disease. Among the population, more than 200,000 are below 20 years. Annual diagnostics indicate that an additional 400,000 citizens develop diabetes symptoms every year. The prevalence projections further suggest that 5 million people are expected to develop diabetic symptoms by 2050.  Among the forecasts, 600,000 are estimated to be youths below 20 years. The pump will eliminate the need to adhere to a strict daily schedule of administering insulin through hypodermic needles. It will enable the population to adopt a simpler and convenient lifestyle by providing consistent supplies of insulin. It will also allow the patients to accommodate daily changes enforced in their lives through travel and variable working hours. The device will help in managing the levels of glucose and consequently lead to fewer weight gains compared to the use of hypodermic injections (JDRF, n.d.).  The sensitization on the utilization of the pumps will enable diabetic patients to improve how well they manage the illness. Users of hypodermic injections are forced to mix different types of insulin to obtain the optimal hormone coverage. Mixing different hormones is supplementary to causing random effects that include instances of severe low blood sugar associated with devastating health results. The pump eliminates the occurrence of shattering results by enabling the users to adjust the machine rather than the insulin mix. It provides warnings when there are sudden changes in the levels of glucose in the body and automatically stops upon the occurrence of hypoglycemia. Sensitization will enable the users to benefit from an increase in diabetic management, fewer hypoglycemic events, less depression and anxiety  (Steineck et al., 2015). Training on the use of the device shall enhance the provision of accurate levels of insulin that will enable the patients to maintain their performance. Type 1 diabetes is associated with younger populations who experience swings in blood sugars that limit their performance. Diabetic patients that use the multiple injection therapy are unable to participate in unscheduled exercises without adjusting their diets. Besides, they are required to schedule their meals to match their insulin response curve.  With the pump, the patients can adjust insulin requirements based on their exercise needs. The pump eliminates the meal planning constraint by empowering the patient to adjust the insulin bolus dosage required for the desired food (Johnson et al., 2014). Sensitization on the use of the pump shall contribute to reducing the amount of insulin doses required by the patients.  Most diabetic patients report the need for lower doses of insulin after shifting from the use of hypodermic needles. The needles provide higher insulin levels that result in insulin resistance. In contrast, the pump provides consistent amounts of insulin that lower the need for the hormone (Grunberger et al., 2014). Health professionals should also educate the youth on the need to maintain hygiene. The use of the pump is associated with a catheter site on the arm and maintaining hygiene helps in avoiding infections. Besides, the patients need training on how to check their glucose levels for at least five times a day. Additional training should entail the necessity of regular checking on the functionality of the pump. A malfunction of the insulin pump has the potential to cause absorption problems that result in the development of Ketoacidosis (Grunberger et al., 2014). In conclusion, the insulin pump helps in the provision of insulin required by the body after being diagnosed with diabetes.  The provision of training on the use of diabetic pumps is a step towards controlling the effect of diabetes on patients. It will assist more than 1.25 million Americans adults and children diagnosed with the disease in living a more flexible lifestyle. Sensitization on the use of the insulin pump is a step to manage the effect of the disease on the projected 600,000 youths expected to contact the illness by the year 2050. By provision of training, health practitioners will enable the patients to manage the disease and enjoy the freedom of participating in unscheduled meals and exercises. Training on the need to maintain hygiene among the users of the pump shall eliminate the chances of developing infections at the catheter site.
