Globalization
This term ‘globalization ’been used to describe the actions leading to integration of international cultures- ranging from aspects of economy, political and nationalist views, ideas and infrastructure. Such interaction, commonly grouped as networking of economies, is used to describe and analyze the relationship between various regions around the globe in terms of incorporating these regions into a singular society. There are various dimensions to globalization- they include, (but are not limited to) inter- national activities that affect both nations’ cultural, economic and social features (Dunning, 1998). These aspects are discussed according to their impact on the nations in study, and how they are enhanced to suit the countries in question.
Trade is considered the biggest globalization aspect by some scholars, especially when considering the economies involved (Andreas & Nadelmann, 2006). The international trade revolves around the exchange of mainly goods, services and information across borders. All countries engage in trade as a means of accessing required commodities, and subsequently end up promoting global interaction on a monetary platform. They thus participate in making the globalization a zone of "GDP interaction" since they promote each other’s national product. International trade promotes countries economic states and alleviates shortages. The formation of trading blocs enhances the effects of trade further, with additional advantages on reducing acts such as illegal trade in unity.
International tourism acts as a major globalization factor- since it involves direct interaction of the nations at hand- along the dimensions of finances, culture and ultimately the movement of persons (Tourists) across borders. According to Meethan, this interaction is significant- in that up to 500, 000 persons may be in flight at a time for purposes of leisure- thereby classifying the as tourists (2004). Such activity, though a trade, is independent of the real economic differences between nations, and citizens of the economically developed countries consistently visit third world countries as tourists (Mullings, 1999). This aspect of globalization is affected by factors such as peace, illegal trading and diplomatic relations between countries involved.
Illegal trade is a key factor, as much as it is negative. It ranges from criminal drug trade, human trafficking, black market trading, smuggling of legal goods and endangered species and their parts. Activities such as human trafficking involve up to 70,000 persons across the United States border alone (Farr, 2005). These activities directly impact globalization on economic as well as humanitarian grounds. They however involve large monetary interactions and hence affect all countries in varying measure. Dunning proposes that the banning of such activities by the nations affected has not limited the measure in which they are carried out, and this makes it a significant binder of international aspects- and eventually global binding (globalization) (1998).
