Port of Hong Kong Centric Logistics Strategy for Sustainable Inland Logistics Management in Supply Chains
Introduction
The port of Hong Kong which is based in Asia located in South China is the largest in the region. It services various purposes such as being the gateway and connecting various countries around the world for trade purposes. The port of Hong Kong acts as a member of the supply chain between the operators and the supply chain patterns. This port has a specific location around the sea and connects to the inland city of Hong Kong. The port also has an efficient infrastructure and the capacity to offer services to large vessels and ships. This port has the best inland connectivity that makes it close to the readily available market (Mangan et al., 2008). It has efficient logistic networks to connect to other ports around the world and the different ports within China.
Supply chain management in the port of Hong Kong, which involves the entire logistics activities and planning of the procurement services. The raw materials being brought in the port are processed, assembled, and packaged. This port faces challenges in dealing with its logistics and supply chain management ((Aguezzoul, 2014). The impact of large sizes affects the operation of the port leads to high traffic leading to concentrations at the port. Sustainable inland logistics management in supply the chain is directly influenced by the Port centric logistics strategy. These logistics strategies adopted by the port of Hong Kong have economic factors and environmental factors. They have increased the gains financially and tried to have environmentally friendly products. The study is concerned with how to port logistics strategy is used to improve the sustainability of inland logistics and supply chain management.
Proposed PCL strategy
The port of Hong Kong should extend logistics operations beyond the port boundary towards the inland facilities. Extending the port operation towards the inland facilities will help to improve the logistics of the port and the supply chain (Kumar and Putnam, 2008). This will improve the freight distribution on the port to increase its customer services that are being offered. The delivery of the goods can be carried out by companies assigned to increase the efficiency of the port. Integration of the logistics of the port will be possible if the port extends its logistics operations. This will lead to the expansion of the structural logistics space or area of operation by the port. The extended logistics operations will lead to storage facilities being developed and constructed in the inland facilities improving sustainable supply chain management. It will help to reduce congestion at the port and minimize the possible waste at the sea. The extending of the logistics operations of the port of Hong Kong is effective in attaining sustainability in the inland supply chain.
Extending the business services such as assembling of the raw materials and packaging of the goods. The port of Hong Kong can decide to extend or transfer their business services to the inland to increase the productivity of their goods and improve the environment. The supply chain involves procurement services that can be extended to the inland. The production of the goods and the raw materials docking at the port can be done inland. Services such as packaging of the goods can easily be at any place to increase customer satisfaction (Kumar and Putnam, 2008). The delivery of the products can be improved within a shorter period when the services are extended towards the inland. Business services involving reverse logistics such as return collections, inspection, and remanufacturing can be extended to the inland. This will integrate its business services that will improve the sustainability of the supply chain. The sustainability of the supply chain will improve by packaging being postponed to request for consumers' specifications. This will result in reducing waste to the environment due to demand fluctuations. Hong Kong extending its business services to the inland will increase the productivity of the port and sustainability of the supply chain.
The port of Hong Kong should change its centric inland distribution into port-centric
