Unemployment in Kenya
Definition
Unemployment is a term usually used by undeveloped and developed nations referring to the state where by the inhabitants of the country has limited opportunities to employment whereby they get access to their daily income and necessities. Unemployment has been one of the major root causes of poverty in most of the African countries, hindering the development especially in terms of the social, political and economic sector of a country (Rono, 2016). Unemployment in Kenya has greatly affected the economic and social development in the country through the increasing rates of social evils and high rates of insecurity especially in the urban areas for example cities and towns. Unemployment has largely affected the nation in various ways as listed below.
Effects of Unemployment in Kenya
Rural urban migration
Rural urban migration refers to the movement of people from rural areas to cities and towns in search of employment opportunities and better living standards. Rural urban migration has greatly led to the increase in population density in the urban areas. This has led to lack of adequate resources for example housing, water, among others. This is because there is high population competing with the limited resources (Kasimu, 2015). It is important for a country to provide more employment opportunities in the rural areas, this could be done through establishment of industries and other firms that will require labour. This will provide employment opportunities to the inhabitants at the rural areas thus reducing the high rate of migration from the rural to urban areas.
Social evils

There will always be insecurity in cities hindering business sector of the country. Social crimes usually arise due to lack of employment opportunities and limited resources (Rono, 2016). It is important for a country to be in a good position to provide employment opportunities to the jobless, this in turn pose a positive impact towards a country’s development.
Congestion
This refers to a situation where by buildings occupy a large percentage as compared to bare land. This means that most buildings are for settlement purposes, it has greatly affected the environment over the past generations where by deforestation took place in order for the creation of human settlements (Kasimu, 2015). It also led to the change of climatic seasons. Congestion in the urban areas has also led to the growth of shanties and slums in the cities and has rose from the past years due to poverty and lack of employment since one will have the access to income and better living conditions.
High dependency level
Lack of employment has also contributed greatly to the high rate of dependency level in the urban areas from relatives in the sense of looking for employment opportunities. This has a negative impact since these people do not contribute towards any development of the nation in turn they lead a nation towards stagnation and poverty (Rono, 2016). Most them usually fall trap into the social evils and petty crimes in the urban areas. It is therefore important for a nation to prom...
