Making Teaching More Appealing: The Government's Role
The demand for teachers in the US supersedes the supply. Despite being the largest population of public servants, their numbers have been dwindling for the last decade. Fewer people are enrolling in professional teacher training programs. All this is happening despite the number of students enrolling in schools rising drastically. Modern teachers face numerous predicaments: managing classrooms of up to 30 or more students, increased indiscipline levels, and lengthy bureaucratic processes in schools. Better pay, working conditions, and career growth opportunities drive numerous trained professional teachers into other careers. The American teacher is an overworked workhorse, earning less than positions in other comparative and with few career development opportunities and growth opportunities. To make the teaching profession more appealing, the government should pay higher wages, offer subsidized opportunities for career growth, and make sensible investments towards bettering the system.
The government has continually failed to honor its promises of substantially investing in the American public education system. For instance,
