Piaget depicts children as busy and very motivated explorers. He suggests that thinking children develop as they act directly to the environment. Piaget had a belief that a child’s mind forms and modifies psychological structures and this makes children achieve good external reality. In Piaget’s theory, children undergo four stages between childhood and adolescence, and all aspects of cognition develop through an incorporated approach. This essay will examine my personal life time line using Piaget’s theory, Erikson theory and Kohlberg theory.
From Piaget’s point of view, for the initial two years, a child does not carry out activities in their head but instead uses their eyes, ears, hands and other sensorimotor equipment. He suggests that organized methods of making sense of experience change with time. The theory involves two processes: adaptation, and organization. In adaptation, one builds schemes through the process of direct interaction with the environment through the process of assimilation and accommodation. In the processes of accommodation, an individual creates new schemes or adjusts old ones while in assimilation one uses the current schemes to interpret the external world.
I was born in 1987 in the second largest city of KSA and I lived with my parents up to 1998. In the year 1999, a drastic change occurred in my life. At that time, I was in the middle school when my father decided to put me in a school far away from our district. This change could have affected my social life. According to Vygotsky, difficult psychological actions possess specific beginning in collective relations. Through combined activities with more grown-up members of their social order, children come to master actions and reflect in techniques that bear significance in their culture (Berk, 2014). The separation from family members affected the way I was used to doing things. And it turned out tricky for me to become accustomed to the new environment. My dad had decided to put in this far away school because he wanted us to study in a different district than my siblings had studied in; this did not help me much but it did more harm. According to Piaget, stimulating physical setting and parental encouragement involvement at home, and affection constantly predict enhanced language and IQ scores in toddlerhood and early infancy. The extent to which parents talk to their children is very important. This is because it contributes strongly to early language progress and achievement in elementary school.
The school I was transferred to was good, and it had good teachers and students were of different nationalities. But in this school I faced a lot of challenges. I could not make friends with anyone in my class, I rarely spoke in class and I neither participated nor asked questions in class. Studies show that those children who take care of themselves while they are young undergo low self-esteem, inconsiderate activities, low educational accomplishment, and apprehension. Children prime of life and the way they use up their time appear to give explanation how they behave in their adult time. Among younger school-age children, those who expend more hours unaccompanied have more adjustment difficulties (Berk, 2014).
In 2011, I moved from Saudi Arabia to USA to get a master’s degree and this change of environment had a great impact on my life. This meant I had to depend on myself in decision-making. This was very difficult because initially I had been dependent on my parents to help me make decisions. According to Piaget, young school-age children, those who spend more hours alone, have more adjustment difficulties and I think, I might have been affected by the same. Piaget explains that as children become old enough to look after themselves, those having a history of concrete child nurturing, are guided by parents by phone calls and have customary after-school household tasks come out to be accountable and well-behaved. In contrast, children who are left to their individual devices are more likely to bend to peer pressures and engage in antisocial behavior (Berk, ...
