Grounded research design utilizes analysis and categorization of the important data in order to make it more accessible and applicable. Grounded research design typically applies codes, concepts, categories, and theories as the main stages of analysis and design as well. This design is used in order to cover a large amounts of data that are related to a single aspect or topic. Grounded research design could develop its own theories and create its own structure that is applicable for the particular research. In other words, each research could have its own structure. This allows researchers to manipulate the data, access it, operate and process in a more effective way. The design allows usage of various types of resources, such as books, websites, interviews, other studies.
Phenomenological research design relates to an analysis of a single topic or phenomenon. However, phenomenological type of research design has more descriptive approach. The method describes the event in details in order to analyze it and have a clear picture of the issues. In other words, it is a useful research design that could be used during the meticulous analysis of the single issue. It helps the researchers to concentrate their attention and effort on a narrow area rather than analysis of the large number of sources, as the grounded research suggests.
The major difference between the two different research designs is the area of application. As a matter of fact, it is necessary to consider that these theories are used in completely different fields of study. The grounded one is usually applied in the social sciences, where there are different theories, ideas, concepts, and opinions. This research design allows comparing two or even more ideas related to a single topic. However, it is necessary to consider the fact that it does not concentrate or deepen into a single area, it rather observes the background of different issues and their premises, while the phenomenological research design analyzes a single phenomenon that has its own unique meaning and influence on a larger scale.
Apart from area of application, the theories also have different premises, as they are appeared in different studies. For instance, the phenomenological research design was implemented by philosophers Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. The goal for this type of research is to transmit the experience and detailed d...
