Domestic Politics of a Foreign Country Student’s Name: Course: Professor’s Name: Date: Domestic Politics of a Foreign Country Introduction The main factor in literature concerning international relations in regard to foreign policy of small or developing states can be seen as responsive to the constraints and opportunities in regard to the international relationship rather than on the concept of domestic politics. The major concern for the assumption is that small states face external threats to their national security rather than from within their territory. This concern makes them more concern about their foreign policy compared to their domestic political process. The major concern is that domestic politics plays a major role in the shaping of their foreign policy. Foreign policy change has received a considerable amount of consideration from scholars immediately after the cold war. In particular we focus our attention to Denmark foreign policy when the government was forced to end their so called "foot note policy”. With the change of their domestic policy it would immerge as a major turning point for their support for NATO and the United States immediately after the cold war. In this particular case the change of foreign policy was a tough condition for their domestic political perspective regarding their foreign policy mainly because of three conditions, the first condition was that the analysis conducted was of a small state and the international level regards international level theory as a "home court advantage”, secondly it deals with their foreign security policy which does not affect their foreign economic policy. When national security is not at risk domestic political actors assume greater influence on their decision making, and finally this major change took place during the period of major changes in international foreign policy and this did not have an impact on international foreign policy. Domestic political influence in regard to foreign policy Domestic and foreign policy cannot be separated the two factors affect the out come of the other. From previous research domestic politics affect the foreign powers of the developed countries or the great powers especially when it comes to small states or failed states. Small states balance the act in two levels one level they use is the government has to balance it own national interest in view of domestic political constrains and their foreign politics. The main goal of political leaders especially in small states is to retain power at all cost some of the consequences has led to civil war and the out come is the emergence of a failed state. The main aim of domestic politics is to retain power and to hang on to power foreign policy might hinder domestic politics from achieving this, for domestic politics to have an advantage over foreign policies they may adjust their domestic policy to harbour those of international communities. Domestic politics may have two political factors, one political opposition and the second one public opposition, in domestic politics one uses any means to stay in power a case study is in Rwanda. President Paul Kagame and the Rwandan Patriotic Front have remained in power through defiance arguing that their has been considerable economic growth and development over a decade. The general public and the opposition have challenged Mr Kagame to step down since he has completed his two terms but a defiant Kagame has remained defiant and has insisted that he will not leave the presidency and he still has one more term to contents as a presidential candidate. The impact of this type of Authoritarianism rule is clearly against democracy and international policy. International human rights criticised the victory calming that Mr Kagame used violence and intimidation to win the last election. They also accuse Mr Kagame of silencing the opposition on the run down to the election and also by gaging the media against reporting anything negative against the president. Although it is not proven but his most vicious contender was Mr Green who was murdered just a few days to the presidential elections. A few years back their was genocide in one of the worst in the history of the world. Few argue that the international community and donors gave Mr Kagame an easy ride to the presidency against democracy and human rights. They argue that the Rwandan government has a single broadcasting or a monopoly on the media and any harassment of the opposition is not reported in the media. One of the major features of domestic political scene is the Gacaca programme which came into focus from the international criminal tribunal of Rwanda and the out come was a coached witnesses and a fouled report.
