Research on Disabilities: Classroom Strategies for Exceptional Learners
For effective learning environment coping with all the learning needs of a classroom, it is important to understand the disabilities of every student. In the current school placements, success alone cannot suffice for a teacher to teach exceptional children professionally, there is the need to use empirical evidence. In this paper, three of the most prevalent disabilities that exist among students are discussed, namely: Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder, along with one teaching strategy associated with each of the above-mentioned disabilities. In focusing on these special needs, one can then design the necessary intervention measures in a way to enhance the learning as well as the social spiritual development of learners.
Specific Learning Disabilities
Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) are conditions where a person has difficulties that prevent or restrict them from learning how to read, write or perform calculations. Children and adolescents with SLD suffer from processing difficulties in both academic areas and learning environments, and may struggle academically as a consequence. A promising approach for supporting children with SLD is through the use of multisensory learning strategies. This strategy addresses visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles for improved retention of what is being taught. For instance, while teaching the curriculum, an educator may use letter–sound instruction and use sands to trace the letters. This becomes beneficial by catering to the learning styles effectively and improves memory and learning (Zaleski, 2023). Besides enhancing the students’ learning this method also enhances the students’ confidence since they also get the chance to learn in the normal process.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the domain of social communication and often involves repetitive behaviors. Autistic students are more likely to thrive within a highly structured classroom environment that is systematically organized to minimize students’ anxiety levels and facilitate their learning. One of the most effective methods for helping the students with ASD is developing their visual timetables (Zubair et al., 2023). A visual schedule is a graphic representation of what is organized for the learner for a certain day hence helping the learner to see where exactly the instructor is leading them and thus keeps them on track in performing each activity. These can be picture, photo or written schedule in a way that can be understood by these children in their level of communication. The structure provided by the visual schedules means that behavioral problems are less likely to occur and that students are more likely to engage as they know what is expected of them throughout the school day (Zaleski, 2023). Moreover, the use of visual supports enhances student independence as they plan and organize themselves during lessons.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity which interferes with the normal running of a class and learning process.
