Introduction
The Romantic Movement began in the 1790s and peaked in the 1820s in Northern Europe. Romantic Movement was established to revolt against the established order of things or, in other words, classicism. It was against the established rules, laws, dogmas and formulas characterized with the classicism. The Christian worldview was characterized by strict culture and laws that defined and clearly created a difference between the human beings and their role to God. However, the Romantic Movement was established amidst love notions, mystery, and superstitions that laid emphasis upon imagination rather than the already established ‘truths’ by the classicism era.
The Romantic Movement was established as a reaction against classicism. Literary Revolution and libertarianism characterized the movement. The new era laid emphasis on the desire to be free of convention and tyranny as well as the emergence of new rights and dignity of the individuals. The Romantic Movement was dissatisfied by the Bourgeois Society that had created an authoritarian regime. They also emphasized on the individual’s potential in self-realization and expression through art (Löwy & Sayre, 2001). It revived medievalism and the elements of arts that had thrived during the Medieval era. It was strongly embodied in literary works such as visual arts, music, and literature. They explored the aesthetic aspects of nature and glorified it through drawings and poetry. Moreover, they also vested their power of imagination beyond the supernatural forces. They created fairy tales, ghosts, witches and demons and were strongly driven by the urge of the known to the unknown. Additionally, they preferred spiritual self-awareness to materialism. Their deep imaginative spirits explored the exotic world and escaped from the reality. It was this age that saw the prevalence of great artistry work in music, paintings, and drawings, the great age of the novel and poetry.
The Romantic word view had a great impact on literature. They established a powerful aesthetic in literary works. In poetry, for example, they believed that it should express genuinely the experiences of nature through personal imagination and emotions without filters or concealing information. The Romantic poets wrote about the imaginative world, the supernatural and the marvelous. Additionally, they explored the exotic world and revived the medieval literature. They found beauty in the aspects of the simple everyday lives. As poetical revolution emerged, a new generation of romantic poets created intellectual and sensibility merge in language expressing the great power and beauty of literature. Such poems include the works of John Keats, Percy Shelley, George Gordon and Lord Byron. Shelley sought extreme effects by combining soaring lyricism with apocalyptic politic vision as observed in his great drama and other poetical works (Hiatt & Jarvis, 2006).
They expressed their beliefs in poetry under great themes characterized by rebellion, envy, and scandal. Moreover, they presented poetry in the most innate form and unique manner in pursuit of the main objective of self-expression through individual liberty. In a nutshell, their great literary works revolved in evoking the past, cult of sensibility, uniqueness, and respect for nature. They emphasized the power of invention and imagination as the main qualities of a poet and regarded satire as something not worthy of serious attention.
The Christian worldview is founded on strong beliefs and practices that advocate for a distinction between human beings and God. The Christian view characterizes God as the Supreme Being whose power and abilities are supernatural and has unquestionable authority (Schatkin, 2012).It has clearly defined principles that affect normal human life in matters such as love, power, and the general order of life. They believe in chastity and living life in its purest form advocating for faith to explain the unforeseen things in nature.
