Introduction
In the United States, over 42,000 people kill themselves each year, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death. While some explanations or causes for suicide are unknown, depression, bipolar disorder, psychotic, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and drugs and alcohol abuse are the top reasons why lives are torn from us. In the military, combat trauma is typically the blame for the increase in suicide. The civilian suicide rate was slightly above that of the military before the Afghanistan and Iraq wars (Kang et al. 2015). The highest spike in suicides came from the Army and Marines between 2005 and 2009. However, the increase in suicide amongst the military is not causally related to combat deployments. Suicide in the military is not good news for the nation, making it imperative for countermeasures to deal with the issue. Despite the preventive measures taken to decrease the suicide rate in the military, a lot more is required; the paper seeks to evaluate the suicide trends in the military by evaluating issues such as the role of combat in suicide, the root causes of suicide, as well as the possible preventive measures applicable.
