Bacon’s Rebellion
Introduction
Bacon's Rebellion may seem like an inconsequential rebellion that arose and was quelled in Virginia. However, by considering the impact of this rebellion, it is clear that it caused ripples throughout history (Tony, 2010). It is one of the most significant events in the history of America. It has been listed by some as the war between those with property and those without, or the shift from indentured servitude to slavery, or even the precursor to the American Revolution. This research paper will seek to establish the relevance of Bacon’s Rebellion in the establishment of slavery. To do this, the paper will first cover the factors that led to the Bacon Rebellion. The paper will also correlate the rebellion to aspects of slavery, democracy, and rights to citizens that come up during the research.
Bacon’s Rebellion
The Bacon Rebellion took place in the plantations of Virginia in 1676. The economic disparity in Virginia before the rebellion was stark, with the laborers and servants having very little economic freedom. This is because, with the discovery of tobacco, planters became rich very quickly. During this period, laborers of black, European, and Indian origins were used to work on the farms (Ira, 2003). At this time, the black and white people behaved similarly with the black people moving to own land, servants, and embracing religion (OpenStax). Racism had not been particularly ingrained in the people.
