Historically, the era of Progressivism sought to address the transformative aspects of the American society in the late 1800’s to early 1920’s. The era entailed political reforms and social activism that geared toward the realization of direct democracy, even distribution of the people in political and economic spheres, and equity in the operationalization of social institutions in line with people’s aspirations. Ideologically, the era, in conjunction with the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), the Country Life Movement, and the Temperance Movement played vital transformations that shape the America’s economic, technological and social-cultural face of today. NAWSA advocated for women legislation rights at the state and local levels in 1890’s that guaranteed voting rights for women by 1920 through the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. As seen in this picture by Hy Mayer in 1915,
the movement cemented the “awakening†of women to realizing their legislative rights, and streamlined direct democracy enjoyed by women and the American citizens in today’s society. The Country Life advocated for rural reforms geared towards urbanizing rural areas and improving the living standards of the residents. Together with the temperance movement, which called for the prohibition of manufacturing, transportation, selling and consumption of alcoholic substances, led to the realization of transformed rural areas, and a sober and responsible society. Agriculture flourished while the elite ventured into medicine and discoveries in the sector, ensuring a healthy society and food security in America to date. Notably, the era set the ground to a unified America by addressing issues with spill overs affecting the society at large such as corruption, marginalization, racial and social-economic discriminations, re-evaluated human rights and freedoms, and business efficiency that transformed America for good (Norton et al., 2011).
American imperialism sought to influence America’s social-cultural and economic ideologies to other territories along political and geographical perspectives of annexation. Strategically, the United States imperialism entailed a transformative revolution through an establishment of political, military, religious and economic institutions that shared America’s special niches and origins. The United States imperialism of the late nineteenth century benchmarked the current US Foreign Policy, military presence, and prowess, and streamlined the transformation agenda in the developing countries. Ideologically, the US imperialism intended to popularize America’s influence in foreign countries through systemic interventions in areas that required practical and opinionated influence. Imperialism included direct political and military control in areas where policy makers felt the need for favorable civil, political, medical and economic ambience and geographical extension through policies that promoted occupation in territories that lacked self-rule. For instance, the annexation of Alta California Port in 1846 to 1847 involved political and military battles, though initially aimed to strengthen democracy and the rule of law in Mexico, strengthened the geographical expansion and occupation of the US in the region’s half northern parts. Politically, as shown by the picture below of the annexation of Hawaii, the US imperialism took
“exceptionalistic†approach in foreign states and geographical regions in the view of the superiority of American society and its institutions. This led to the annexation of states such as the state of Hawaii and Latin America, and recently in the invasion of Iraq in 2001, intended to streamline democracy, equity and the rule of law, and the military presence in warring nations such as Turkey and Syria, while expanding business opportunities for its people.
The United States involvement in the World War I targeted the German Empire between 1917 and 1918 in a bid to neutralize war and conflicts between German Empire and the British with the backing of central powers. The United States intervention sparked controversies due to its neutrality policy of thoughts and deed while supplying allies (The French, the British Empire, and the Russian Empire) with military assistance. Strategically, the involvement of the US in the World War I set the political and military angles and diplomatic policies that saw Woodrow Wilson conquer the war and instil national values, and a long-term economic agenda. Initially, the US instigated independent involvement channeled through diplomatic interventions, whereby as an independent power, it provided supplies, raw materials and money, but later teamed up with the allies militarily. Despite the controversies of policy and interoperability of military functions, the government had to increase its size and capacity as well as that of the military in order to participate in the warfare. Diplomatically, the US states involvement supplemented its foreign policy agenda and that of the progressive era to German Empire with the help of allies. As demonstrated in the battle of the Somme by the picture below, Wilson’s decision to back the allies in the warfare augmented the US’s view of the need for modernization, and establishment of institutions that ensured democracy and reforms to its people and the world, compared to the German Empire who held a contrasting view.
After the war’s success. Wilson’s reorganization of the size of the military and government proved to work well in post-war era while patriotism and nationalism values instilled on citizens augmented government’s...
