Samuel Walker’s 5 propositions
Introduction
One of the primary objectives that Samuel Walker developed the 36 propositions was to assist people comprehend criminal justice and crime in order to make people start to think clearly about crime policies. The criminal justice system experiences serious problem of resources which affects the capability to efficiently reduce the rate of crime. The fight on drugs and crime have been massive for a very long time. There has been an increase of the prisoners for the last few decades. For instance, in 1970, there were 196,400 inmates compared to 1,700,000 in 2009 (Przeszlowski & Crichlow, 2018). This is an illustration that the crime rate has always been in the rise for the last few decades. The effects of the war on crime on racial, social and ethnic minority in the society, is one of the primary objective that Samuel Walker decided to come with the 36 propositions. Having been newly appointed as a Police Chief in Anytown, which has a roughly 120,000 people, I have been tasked by the Mayor to implement 5 of Samuel Walker’s 36 propositions to assist revamp particular police departments.
Most current crime control proposal are nonsense
Overview
Walker’s suggestion shows that the modern crime proposals in place is not based on realism but the opinion of the people. People are mostly influenced by the media on the view of crime and the entire criminal justice system. According to Walker, he supported this opinion with consequences from the Sentencing Project where public view studies showed that the people’s opinions of the criminal justice system is very soft, making crime to be more widespread. Politicians tend to believe that people think that making severe laws concerning domestic violence and rape would change the incidences of such crimes. However, such crimes have a low repetition rate. Legislators were only attempting to change the people’s view of the criminal justice system. Instead, they were only changing the system and doing more harm than giving solutions.
Making policy change
Society is starting to take a position on ethnic discrimination and profiling as a result of the media inspecting the conduct of some of the police forces targeting some of the races. The crime control rules seem to be legislators propelling assumptions out there, while trying to find something which lasts (Walker, 2014). There is the need to use trial and error approaches in addition to involving the community assumptions of criminality. In addition, society is seeking justice that involves an extensive custodial sentence, crime regulation strategies that are intended to put lawbreakers behind bars contrasted with rehabilitation.
Utilizing Walker’s propositions
Since the police have been falsifying the reports and covering up the citizens complains about involving excessive use of force, it is important to collect enough evidence to ensure that there is sufficient data, research, factual information and evidence to be presented in court. It would be important to train the police officers to conduct themselves in the right manner to avoid being on the wrong. The police would be required to always have enough evidence whenever they are convicting any individual for wrongdoing. This would help the public to avoid false accusation against the police officers. The public believe that the police are always convicting citizens for the wrongs they did not do, while in real situation the citizens have committed the crimes. The police should be allowed to ensure they have enough proof so that the public can change their view concerning the police.
