In January 2013, Lance Armstrong confessed to using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) while competing and winning the Tour de France cycling competition over seven years. He has been stripped of his titles and banned from the sport for life.
One of the drugs he has confessed to using is Erythropoietin (EPO), a natural occuring hormone used by the medical community to treat a number of health conditions.

The use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) has occurred in professional athletes over the years. According to Humphreys & Ruseski (2011, p. 208), many athletes administer various doping methods that continuously become very difficult to uncover. Some of these regimes of doping used are unsafe. For instance, in 2013, Lance Armstrong hit the frontline in many newspapers for the wrong reasons. He confessed to using Erythropoietin (EPO) to enhance his performance when he won the Tour de France cycling competition. He went from hero to cheat overnight (The Guardian, 2012).
