There are many instances where a person may feel the urge to take his or her life. Some reasons leading to suicide include depression and anxiety, which may be as a result of fear of stigmatization, poor health, and a feeling of rejection in the society. Some people therefore, feel the need to escape from suffering through committing suicide. Suicide is a hot topic in the global domain and the following measures should be taken to prevent or eradicate this menace (Marcus, 2010, P. 18). Firstly, schools, churches, Non Governmental Organizations, government arms should offer free sensitization to the public. Media houses, whether digital or print should educate the entire populace freely and soundly about suicide. Secondly, when one notices that an individual shows signs of committing suicide, they should reach out to these victims, speak to them and advise them on the best way to deal with the depression they are going through (Hirono, 2012, P. 50).
The third way of preventing suicide is to ensure that the affected people are offered guidance and counseling to stabilize their emotions and control the imagination of killing themselves. Fourthly, one should respond quickly, give moral support and offer all the attention that might change the victim from harboring the idea of committing suicide. When one notices that a family has the idea of committing suicide, he should spread this information to any counseling authority and give the victim company until he or she gets help (O'Conno et al., 2010, P. 33). Fifthly, where the suicide conditions are imminent, they should call emergency help lines such as 911 for further help. Sixthly, those who may be planning to commit suicide because of their health status should be taken to hospitals to get a comprehensive treatment and management of their ailments. Finally, people attempting suicide should always be kept away from any harmful materials such as, ropes, poisons, guns, and sharp objects (Wasserman and Wasserman, 2009, P.67).
