Contrasting Theory X and Theory Y in the Human Relations Movement
The Human Relations Movement is a culmination of several philosophical, psychological, and sociological concepts that led to the creation of McGregor's Theory Y and Maslow's Theory X. These two theories are important in understanding human behavior because, when combined, both help us explain how we maintain relationships with others, including our family members, teachers, bosses or co-workers.
Theory X advocates that workers are motivated primarily by rewards and threats and thus focus on material issues to get ahead in their jobs. This theory emphasizes the importance of money. While Theory Y, on the other hand, is focused on relationships between individuals and promotes cooperation for the common good (Bridgman, 2019). Both have helped shape the world of human relations and have impacted how we interact with each other, leading to the advent of many theories that focus on enhancing the quality of those interactions. Such a theory shows many similarities with Theory X and Theory Y, although it is not so obvious initially (Emanuelsson, 2022). Through the paper, the similarities and differences between both theories are by comparing them in their principles, ideologies, effects, approaches, and purposes, therefore, understanding that these two theories are not completely wrong or completely right but just a bit off from being considered innovative.

Theory X is a term coined by Douglas McGregor in his 1960 book The Human Side of Enterprise. It refers to an approach to management in which workers are seen as lazy and driven only by the need for money. They do not want to work hard, and they do not want to take on responsibility. Thus, leaders must be in control and ensure that workers stay on task—otherwise, they will waste time or sabotage their work.
There are many scholarly sources other than The Human Relations Movement: Pioneered by Maslow and McGregor that discuss Theory X vs. Theory Y of human motivation theory; one such source is Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, and Practices by Peter F. Drucker (Bridgman, 2019). Theory X is more commonly associated with Frederick W. Taylor's efficiency methods, while Theory Y is more closely aligned with the human relations movement founded by Abraham Maslow and Douglas McGregor. Douglas McGregor also introduced theory Y in his 1960 book The Human Side of Enterprise. In this model, workers are seen as inherently motivated to succeed at their jobs and can be trusted to take on more responsibility if given a chance (Emanuelsson, 2022).
