Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most preferred therapeutic interventions for psychological disorders. It aims at enabling patients to modify their cognitive processes, feelings, and behavioral patterns (Joseph & Murphy, 2013). The other useful therapeutic interventions include Carl Rogers’ person-centered therapy and the humanistic-existential approach. The person-centered approach focuses on promoting the fulfillment, growth, and self-actualization of clients (Farber, 2012). The humanistic-existential approach entails the process of leveraging on the self-awareness of patients to enhance their health and relationships. Abram Maslow played an important role in the development of the humanistic-existential approach (Cooper & McLeod, 2011). The purpose of this paper is to discuss ways in which person-centered therapy and the humanistic-existential approach might be better than CBT is treating mental and behavioral problems.
