Psychological Impact of Technology on Child Development
In the recent past, technological advancement has been increasingly evident in different spheres of life, different parts of the industry, and in various segments of organizational settings. Technology has been adopted as it makes the world a global village, making people from different parts of the world communicate and do business at ease (Appio, 2019). However, it has been touted as a necessary evil (Johnson, 2004). It has come with its adverse negative effects on the population, most affected being children. This paper seeks to comprehensively particularize the psychological impact of modern technology on children's development.
Technology has interfered with children's concentration. Many kids who are glued to their gadgets watching videos or watching online items tend to have a little focus and attention to detail. Their reasoning becomes captured by what they watch and see online and cannot, therefore, come up with their well-thought ideas (Tassia, 2020). They tend to have low self-esteem being that their ability to execute ideas becomes diminished. When children spend too much time on phones and televisions, they reduce their time to interact with others (Gunter, 1997). Interacting with fellow children teaches a child to develop a character of relating with others that will help even in the future. This will help children to boost their self-esteem, raise their moods and become mentally stable as they learn a lot from their peers when they interact.
Harmful use of social media causes depression and anxiety among children (Jackson, 2003). For example, they can be involved in social media discussions that can demean their dignity and reduce their confidence and concentration on essential aspects of life. This can damage the mental health of kids and hurt their academic life. Untidy videos can injure the morality of kids (Greenfield, 2001). Especially the adolescents who are always naïve are victims of impure videos posted online by people with unscrupulous behaviors. Children who cannot differentiate virtual and real-life scenarios may be adversely affected by what they come across on the internet. For example, children may come across horror movies that might make them have nightmares and unnecessary fears related to real-life situations. This can be very disastrous to their emotional well-being and mental health in general (Greenfield, 2006).
In a nutshell, technological advancements have heralded massive impacts on the lives of children across the globe. Many children have lost concentration on essential matters, others have been cyberbullied, and others have been mentally compromised after watching unclean videos over the internet. Low self-esteem and lack of good relation skills have been a significant negative impact on children who rely on technology to meet their desires. Parents must ensure that their children constructively benef
