A social problem refers to the condition or issue that affects a large number of people in the society, deviating them from their desirable social norms. (Fuller & Myers, 1941) Such problems include crime, poverty, immigration stresses and racial discrimination. There are various social problems prevalent within Australia. These ranges from the environmental problems such as climate change to social issues like domestic violence, gender, work place inequality and discrimination against various groups. This paper focuses mainly on the domestic violence concerns that have been reported in Australia. Over the recent past, social violence within households has been on the rise, particularly women being the most affected lot. The essay will also look at the symbolic interactionism theory and explaining the causations of the vice and how it happens in the society.
Domestic Violence
According to the data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on family, the most common form of violence is family violence. It occurs when the perpetrators, most commonly being males, exercise control over the other. When these instances happen within intimate partner relationships and lead to physical abuse, they are known as domestic violence. Nevertheless, the abuse may extend beyond physical violence and may involve actions that intimidate or humiliate other family members within the household.
Domestic violence includes the following:
* Verbal abuse – This refers to the vocal humiliation either in public or private with the intention to intimidate and demean the victim’s sexuality, body image or capacity in a relationship as a spouse or parent.
* Psychological abuse – The use of threats in regards to children’s custody, asserting a justice system that is against the victim. This is extended by acts of instilling fear such as mocking and angrily destroying property, bullying pets and reckless driving.
* Emotional abuse – The perpetrator blames the partner for all the inconveniences in the relationship, alters the self-worth and self-esteem of the victim by blackmailing him/her emotionally, making unnecessary comparisons and withdrawing interest from the partner.
* Spiritual abuse – The perpetrator may sabotage religious beliefs to force the victim subordinate to roles. The use of
