In the Golden Age of technology, people are exposed to media constantly during their daily lives. The media has a strong influence on the thoughts of people as individuals and as a worldwide society. The messages conveyed are in the attention of the huge conglomerates that manage them. The mass media – television and film – is part of our daily life. Media is a powerful tool, which provides us with entertainment and information
A keen look at television shows and films reveals a primary theme depicted by those in command: women are considered deceitful, less competent, promiscuous, and preoccupied with trivialities while men are seen as powerful. Men play the key role that makes them superior to women. The American media dictates how an ideal woman and man should look. The public perpetuated into future generations internalizes this unconcealed control of women by TV shows and films. By cross sectioning the issues in the media and issues on gender inequality with these perspectives, the influence of media on sexism has become tangible in many America films and TV series.
The media present men and boys with an antagonistic world which devalues, trivializes and marginalizes men and attempts to change them. If media persist to let systematic attacks on males, the society as a whole will pay the price because of higher escalating social unrest, male unemployment, and more males in prison. For example, in TV series, Prison Break, all the prisoners are men put in an hostile environment. This portrays a negative image about men as criminals.
Female stereotypes in the TV series tend to underrate women as a whole, and reduce them to passive human beings and sexual objects. When female characters are not the conventional mothers and homemakers, they will face the consequences that come together with that. The leading female characters in film industry are frequently seen as beleaguered by their responsibilities and roles in comparison to their male counterparts. Film industry portrays female characters that are in positions of power, as deceitful with irresponsible behavior. On the other hand male characters are portrayed as strong, sincere and having responsible behavior. In the latest TV series, Breaking Bad, the principal female character engages herself in an unfaithful affair with her boss. Although her husband is a secret drug lord, he does it in the name of his family and his actions are glorified. Public reception of the wife is that she is cruel and immoral and the husband is a hero.
Gender discrimination and inequality are believed to cause and bring poverty and susceptibility to the community as a whole. Household and intra-household resources, and knowledge are key influences in personal aptitudes to take advantage of outside occupation opportunities or respond suitably to threats. The way in which women and men are portrayed in TV series and films affects gender equity globally. It is vital to establish the causes of stereotypical depiction and underrepresentation and to develop practical strategies to improve the status quo. It has been argued that exposure to a thin, attractive, sex-saturated culture may be having a negative effect on social-emotion among the teens.
The American films and TV shows have been criticized for its depiction of women as objects whose significance is measured based on their usefulness to men and children, where. It becomes hard to see them as thinking, feeling, and capable people. Continuously portraying women in an extremely sexualized way has influenced that all women will be likely viewed as sexual objects. Women are seen as being cheerleaders, spectators, or supportive spouses or mothers in most American films and not as a dominant persons. Regularly, women have been underestimated for their contribution and not considered for their great level of skills and leadership ability. Televised programming figures are higher for male than female characters and this can be associated with the need for masculinity at the adolescent stage, which causes gender inequality.
