According to the National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity Report, one in every four British adults experience a distinguishable type of mental disorder at least once a year. Worldwide, it is estimated that over 450 million people have a mental health problem. Following this, most governments including the UK government have taken to the challenge by ensuring that systems and policies are put in place to reduce the prevalence of mental illness as well as the effects that this cause in the society. Even at a time that health technology is on the rise, mental health remains a major problem for many nations and more notably the developed countries such as the UK. This has led to several debates that include the relationship between mental health and race, ethnicity, social class as well as age (Beresford, Nettle & Perring, 2010, p. 98).
This paper aims at investigating various mental health perspectives as perceived by different societies around the world. In doing so, the paper will also explain the various classifications of mental illness as defined by psychiatrists toady. In addition, the paper will give a discussion of the factors associated with mental health namely age, ethnicity and social class. In simple terms, mental health can defined as the condition of a person about their psychological and emotional wellbeing. From this, mental wellbeing is the state that an individual who has control of their emotion and normal life stress exhibits. The lack of control of one's emotions and or psychology leads to various forms of mental illness. The latter refers to the wide range of mental conditions that affects an individual's emotions or psychology. Examples of mental illness include depression and schizophrenia.
