English is a world wide international language. It is the primary spoken language in most countries around the world such as Britain, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Australia/. In the 19th century, Britain was the most active colonial country. The British colonists and explorers spread their language wherever they went. English became the official language for most of the countries colonized by Britain. In the 20thcentury, America became the most powerful nation. Americans spread the language to other countries of the world (Curzan&Anne, 19). American international corporations have made sure English remained the international language for business. Hollywood and music industry have also made sure it is the primary language for media and showbiz.
The rise of English was not only from the nature of the language but also from the fact that it was a mature language when the European countries were expanding their influence and spreading their culture worldwide (Kohnen & Thomas, 45). Over a thousand years ago, Western Europe was divided into three sections, which were the east, the middle, the south and west. In the East, people spoke Slavonic, and in the middle, they spoke German languages including the Scandinavians. In the south and west, people spoke Latin languages. In the far west of Europe, people spoke Celtic languages such as Gaelic. England was then a German country and its people spoke a variety of German languages. In 1066, England defeated the Normans from France.They came with their language called Norman French which was also a Romance language.
Later on, the nobility of England spoke French and read Latin while the ordinary people spoke old English. The two languages began to influence each other since they existed side by side. As a result, Norman French became Anglo-Norman. The old English picked up vocabularies from Anglo-Normans and evolved into Middle English. The middle English was quite different from other European languages(Kohnen & Thomas, 78). It was partly Germanic and Romance. The Celtic languages also influenced the Middle English to a smaller degree.
Eventually, the Middle English spread to the largest part of the population becoming the dominant language in England. By the 14th century, it was on the way to being the national language of everyday life, for the administration and literature.
